Occasionally people cross your path that not only heal those traumatic memories but inspire you to a point of striving to the next goal. Delanie Van Wyk was a little girl who was introduced to us by Reach for a Dream who's ultimate dream was to own a Persian Cat.
Delanie had undergone numerous surgeries and all she wanted in life was a Persian Kitten to make all the challenges worth while.
At first I was very hesitant as the Persian is quite challenging at the best of times and felt that the added pressure of looking after a kitten on top of this little girls challenges would be too much.... little did I know that Rosey was born for little Delanie and the bond was made in Heaven.
This is Delanie and Rosey's Story:
On the Saturday of 28th October 2016 my daughter Delanie’s biggest dream came true.
Delanie was born with congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot; she was also diagnosed with Pierre Robinson syndrome. Delanie had a few surgeries in her little life. At 6 months she got her first heart operation, and then at 7 and 18 months they did the operations to repair her cleft palate, at the age of 3 years she had her first open heart surgery. With this operation they had to replace one valve and the doctors told us that another operation will be needed at a later stage. Delanie started to struggle with chest pains, we then did a few tests and we just could not understand what the cause of it was.
We are truly blessed with the most incredible Cardiologist, Dr EL Colyn. Dr Colyn spent some time with Delanie and we discovered that Delanie was getting anxiety attacks. She referred us to Elsa Struwig that is a play therapist, which is another Angel in our lives, Delanie started having sessions with Elsa and she discovered that Delanie has some PTD.
As time passed Delanie really struggled, not being able to run around with her friend, not being able to play in the pool, she loves dancing and couldn't keep up with the dancing. We have a really close relationship with Dr Colyn, we contacted her and we discussed Delanie's situation. We planned an angiogram, the day before the angiogram things just didn’t go as planned. Dr Colyn took all her results and measurements and sat down with Dr de Villiers, the Heart surgeon, who did all Delanie's heart surgeries. We had to see him and got the news that Delanie needed a new valve.
I kept Elsa updated all the time on what’s waiting for Delanie and we had to try and prepare Delanie mentally for what was waiting for her. Elsa playing a huge roll in Delanies life who got this beautiful colour point Persian, Violet, which she wanted to use for therapy at her practice, as a young child Delanie always loved cats dearly. Delanie fell in love with Violet, they actually had a saying:" everyone needs a Violet in their lives". Delanie was madly in love with Violet. Delanie went in for her surgery and her dad promised her that he will get her a Violet. While Delanie was in ICU we got bad news that Violet passed away. She was literally heart broken, physically and emotionally. Reach for a dream had a meeting with Delanie asking her what her biggest 5 dreams where......... and her answer was, I want a Violet.... Everyone needs a Violet.
Carina that is also a therapist at Unitas working with kiddies going through tough times bought Delanie a teddy bear dressed in purple.... and they called her Violet.
Delanie went for her surgery which was very traumatic but recovered very well having been in ICU for only 5 days. She then started asking when I am getting my real Violet.... I started looking where I am going to get her, her own Persian. Her dad promised her she will get her Persian for being such a brave girl. Our biggest struggle was finding a good breeders and got hold of Shaun of Carmandale Persians & Exotics, and he sent me the pictures of little Rosey who I showed to Delanie and she said to me: “Mamma dit is my Violet".
I didn’t want to interfere with Reach for a Dream making Delanie's dream come true and waited patiently for the process to unfold. Delanie just kept saying that she was her baby.
I contacted Daleen from Reach for a dream and apologising for being so "voor op die wa" and had to say if they did not get Rosey we will have to get little Rosey for Delanie because she just connected with Rosey. Daleen being so considerate and understanding then contacted Shaun. Delanie basically asked me every day, if I heard anything from Oom Shaun and Tannie Daleen. I told her Rosey won’t be coming to us and she just stuck to her decision that she wanted Rosey and said it’s her baby!
After all the arrangements were made between Shaun and Reach for a Dream we met with the Reach for a dream team and organised to meet at a nursery for the handover ceremony and as we came around the corner, there was Shaun with Rosey! For the first time I saw my 11 year old so overwhelmed over a gift that she burst out in tears. She never expected it.
Delanie has a very strong bond with her granny and we saw the other day that Rosey was born on the exact same day as her granny. How profound life is and the messages we get as Rosey was born for our little Delanie!
We are so privileged to have this little Rosey and thank God for making dreams come true through humble people. Delanie and Rosey both have a very soft personality and have bonded beautifully.
Thank you to each and every one being a part of this Dream being filled for a little girl. To some people this may be something small but to Delanie it meant the world.
Thank you Royal Canin for the awesome gifts and what a privilege that so many hands reached out where they could.
Good hearted people do still exist.
Lots of Love The van Wyk family
Huge thank you to Reach for a Dream for making Delanie's Dream come true and Royal Canin for the wonderful contribution of goodies for the well being of little Carmandale Rosey.
